Mozart - Vespers - Instruments of Time & Truth - SJE Arts, Oxford
1 October 2021, 10:00I performed Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore [K. 339] at SJE Arts (St. John the Evangelist Church) on Iffley Rd in Oxford on Friday 1st October 2021. I last performed at SJE Arts in 2015.

On this occasion I played with the Oxford-based orchestra, ‘Instruments of Time & Truth’. We played in the 11am concert, which was part of the Divine Office Festival, promoted by Martin Randall Travel. This Oxford-based festival featured several performances in the early hours of the morning. This festival observes the eight services of the monastic day, all performed at the time of day for which they were liturgically intended. Ten choirs and ensembles performed in eight chapels and churches, with 17 concerts and three lectures in total. The festival included performances from the renowned choirs of the following colleges: Magdalen, New College, The Queen’s College and Merton.
Instruments of Time & Truth performed the Mozart Vespers with Merton College Choir, under the baton of Ben Nicholas. I was a last-minute replacement, as was Sophie Bevan (soprano) who stood in for an ill soloist. She also sang a brilliant rendition of Mozart’s Exultate [K. 165], which preceded the Vespers in this short programme.

After the concert, I approached a member of the choir who had not yet recognised me. I used to teach him the trumpet when I lived in Balham and he lived relatively nearby. I taught him quite regularly for about 2 years, around about seven or eight years ago. He is now 18, and has just started in his first year at Oxford University. I was so pleased to hear that he still plays the trumpet. He told me he passed his Grade 8 with a merit, and he has brought his trumpet to university with him. I wish him all the best in his studies.
Due to the (ongoing) fuel supply crisis, I decided to stay in Oxford overnight in a nice little B&B. On Thursday evening, I was able to meet up with some friends from the Oxford Bach Soloists who were rehearsing in New College. I will be back in Oxford this weekend to record music by Mozart and Haydn with Instruments of Time & Truth.
