Monteverdi - Vespers - His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts - London Oratory

I played cornett with His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts and the St Cecilia Players for a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers at The Oratory on Brompton Road in London on Wednesday 10th May 2023. The performance was directed by Charles Cole and featured the exceptional singers of the Schola Cantorum of the London Oratory School and the tenor soloists Peter Davoren and Mark Dobell.

We performed an untransposed (high) Magnificat: Adrian Woodward and Jeremy West played opening of the Deposuit beautifully, and I played the echo from the organ loft.

It was a pleasure for me to work with His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts for the first time, and it was great to play with the Schola Cantorum and Charles Cole again—I played first trumpet in their Bach B Minor Mass this time last year.

This was, once again, a very uplifting performance and it was wonderful to hear such fine voices and well-trained young musicians performing at such an exceptional standard. Congratulations to them and to their teachers!
