Bach - Magnificat - English Chamber Choir
24 October 2022, 20:30Just before the pandemic, I performed with the English Chamber Choir in a performance to celebrate the 75th birthday of the trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins.
On this occasion, Monday 24th October 2022, the English Chamber Choir was celebrating its own anniversary—its fiftieth—at Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square. A spokesperson from the choir explained that this choir had performed in the second concert that took place at Cadogan Hall. He also explained that the choir sings everything from classical masterpieces to progressive rock music and lots in-between, with equal passion.
The conductor, Guy Protheroe, has been there since the beginning and tributes were paid to him and his wife, Ann Manly, who both play such active roles within the organisation.
Our trumpet section comprised Russell Gilmour, William Russell and Gareth Hoddinott, with Ben Fullbrook on timpani. We played in Bach’s Magnificat in D (BWV 243) and also in the encore. Guy Protheroe explained that in the choir’s fifty year history they had never been able to sing ‘God Save the King’ in Handel’s Zadok the Priest while a King had sat on the British throne, so they included this iconic work as an encore. It was a good concert, and the choir did a great job rendering Handel's Dixit Dominus, Bach's Magnificat in D major and Handel's Zadok the Priest.
