York
6 December 2014, 22:00York is wonderful city. It is one of those places that I always leave and think, 'I could easily live there'. There's a relaxed charm about the place. It has a good balance of down to earth people, fine architecture, interesting history, an excellent university (and all that comes with) and good rail links up and down the East Coast mainline, and also over the Pennines to Manchester.
While we are on the subject of railways, York is something of a focal point for rail enthusiasts with the National Railway Museum located there. Every time I go to York, I try to visit the NRM and this trip was no exception.
I was in York to play for Peter Seymour who is the director of the Yorkshire Bach Choir. I have done several concerts for Peter over the years, this time we were playing Handel's 'Messiah' in St. Michael Le Belfry, next to York Minster. I was playing 2nd trumpet to Niels Tilma, a Danish trumpet player, who is great to spend time with.
The concert was excellent, with many memorable moments from the fantastic soloists, choir and orchestra. It was great to see old friends Peter Harvey and Matthew Long (bass & tenor soloists) and to meet several new people too.
The hospitality in York was excellent. They really know how to extend a great Yorkshire welcome! Peter's family had been working hard to prepare an evening meal for the whole orchestra and they had also prepared an amazing amount of food for the after-show party. Many thanks to all for an excellent visit to York!
